The United Kingdom offers various types of visas depending on the purpose of your stay. Choosing the right category is crucial, as each visa type has specific requirements and conditions. The main ones include:
ETA Visa (Electronic Travel Authorisation)
The ETA is an electronic authorization that citizens of certain countries, including EU member states, must obtain before traveling to the UK. It is similar to the ESTA system used for travel to the United States but applies to the UK. The ETA allows entry into the country for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is valid for 2 years from the date of approval. During this period, you may travel to the UK multiple times without reapplying, provided that your personal circumstances or the purpose of your travel have not changed.
Tourist Visa (Standard Visitor Visa)
This visa is intended for those who wish to visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family or friends, attending cultural or sporting events, receiving medical treatment, or engaging in short-term business activities.
To obtain this visa, applicants must prove they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay without working or accessing public funds. They must also demonstrate their intent to leave the UK at the end of their visit, such as by providing a return ticket and documents showing strong ties to their home country (e.g., stable employment or property ownership). Any discrepancies in the documentation or unclear travel intentions may lead to visa refusal.
Work Visas
The UK offers several types of visas for those wishing to work in the country. Among the most common is the Skilled Worker Visa, designed for qualified professionals who have received a job offer from a UK-licensed employer. To be eligible, the applicant must meet specific criteria, including having the necessary qualifications, earning a minimum salary for the role, and demonstrating an adequate level of English proficiency.
Another important category is the Global Business Mobility Visa, aimed at employees of international companies who are temporarily transferred to the UK for work. This visa is especially useful for executives, managers, and technical specialists.
The Health and Care Worker Visa was introduced to address staffing shortages in the healthcare and social care sectors. It allows doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers to work in the UK under more favorable conditions than other work visas.
Student Visa
This visa is intended for individuals who wish to pursue a course of study at a recognized institution in the United Kingdom. Applicants must show that they have been accepted by a UK university or college, possess sufficient funds to cover living and accommodation expenses during their studies, and have an adequate knowledge of English. Additionally, students are required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, which grants access to the National Health Service (NHS) during their stay.
International students in the UK also have the opportunity to work part-time during term time and full-time during holidays, making this visa particularly attractive for those looking to help fund their education.
Investor and Innovator Visas
The Innovator Founder Visa is designed for entrepreneurs who wish to launch an innovative business in the UK. To obtain this visa, the business idea must be approved by an authorized endorsing body, which evaluates the viability and innovation of the proposal.
The Global Talent Visa is aimed at individuals with exceptional abilities in fields such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, the arts, and academia. This visa provides a flexible option for those who do not require a sponsoring employer and can demonstrate a significant contribution to their field.
Family Reunion Visa
Family members of British citizens or UK residents may apply for a Family Reunion Visa. This includes spouses, partners, minor children, and in some cases, elderly parents who are financially dependent on the UK resident. Applicants must prove the genuineness of the family relationship, have sufficient financial resources to support themselves without public funds, and — in the case of spouses and partners — pass an English language test.
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
This is the final step for those who wish to settle permanently in the UK after a period of continuous residence. The requirements depend on the type of initial visa and the number of years legally spent in the country. Obtaining ILR allows individuals to live, work, and study in the UK without restrictions and is a key milestone for those aiming to apply for British citizenship.
