The Canadian immigration system offers a wide range of visas and permits, designed to meet different needs: from simple tourism to study, work, investment, or permanent relocation. Each category has its own purpose, requirements, and procedures, and choosing the correct visa is essential to avoid delays or application refusals.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
The eTA is an electronic authorization required for citizens of visa-exempt countries, such as most of the European Union (including Italy), entering Canada by air for tourism, business, or transit. The application is completed online in a few minutes, providing personal information, passport details, and answering simple eligibility questions. Once approved, the eTA is electronically linked to the passport and remains valid for five years (or until the passport expires), allowing multiple entries of up to six months at a time.
Although the process is simple, the eTA can be refused if security issues, criminal records, or previous violations of Canadian immigration law are discovered. Therefore, even for a seemingly “quick” authorization, it is important to provide truthful and complete information.
Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV)
The Visitor Visa is intended for those who are not from eTA-eligible countries or who plan longer stays or have specific purposes. It is required, for example, by citizens of countries that need a visa for any type of entry. With a TRV, one can normally stay in Canada for up to six months, though in some cases an extension can be requested without leaving the country.
The TRV can be single-entry (one entry) or multiple-entry (multiple entries during its validity) and is obtained by submitting a complete application, including proof of sufficient funds, a return ticket, and documents justifying the purpose of the visit. In some cases, biometric data (fingerprints and photo) may be required.
Student Visas
A Study Permit is required for anyone intending to attend courses longer than six months in Canada. To obtain it, the applicant must present an acceptance letter from a recognized institution (Designated Learning Institution – DLI), demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover tuition, living expenses, and return costs, and sometimes provide medical or police certificates.
One advantage of the Study Permit is the possibility, in many cases, to work part-time up to 20 hours per week during studies and full-time during academic breaks. This allows students to supplement their income and gain Canadian work experience. At the end of their studies, those meeting certain criteria may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), opening the path to permanent residency.
Work Visas
Canada offers different types of work visas, suited to temporary or permanent needs:
- Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP): requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), a document proving that no Canadian citizens or permanent residents are available to fill the position.
- International Mobility Program (IMP): does not require an LMIA and covers categories such as intra-company transfers, international agreements (e.g., CETA), and special permits for skilled professionals.
Many work permits can be “closed” (tied to a specific employer) or “open” (allowing work for multiple employers). Work experience gained in Canada may contribute to eligibility for economic immigration programs, such as Express Entry.
Working Holiday Visa
The Working Holiday Visa, part of the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, is aimed at young citizens from countries with bilateral agreements, usually aged 18–35. It allows staying and working in Canada for a period ranging from 12 to 24 months, depending on the agreement with the home country.
This visa is particularly valued for its flexibility: it allows work in various sectors, travel, and cultural immersion without being tied to a single employer. Requirements include a valid passport, sufficient funds for initial sustenance, and health insurance for the entire stay.
Investor and Entrepreneur Visas
The Start-Up Visa Program targets entrepreneurs with innovative ideas supported by designated Canadian organizations, such as business incubators or venture capital funds. Its goal is to attract talent capable of creating globally competitive businesses and generating employment in Canada.
In addition to the federal program, many provinces and territories offer specific paths for entrepreneurs and investors through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), often requiring a minimum investment, managerial experience, and detailed business plans.
Family Reunification Visas
The Family Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor spouses, partners, dependent children, and in some cases, parents and grandparents. The sponsor is legally committed to financially support the family member for a period ranging from 3 to 20 years, depending on the category.
This program is an important part of Canada’s immigration policy, aiming to reunite families and facilitate the integration of newcomers.
