Standing water in your yard is more than just an eyesore; it creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, damages the root system of your grass, and can eventually erode the soil and seep into your home's foundation. Solving a drainage problem requires understanding why water is pooling and selecting the right strategy to guide it away. With a methodical approach, you can transform a soggy, unusable landscape into a dry, healthy, and attractive extension of your living space.
Before you dig a single trench, you must observe how water moves across your property during a heavy rain. The goal of solving yard drainage is to stop negative grading, where the slope directs water toward your house rather than away from it. You also need to identify whether you are dealing with surface runoff from a hard roof or driveway, or a high water table that keeps the soil saturated no matter the weather.
The natural contour of your land is the primary driver of drainage. Look for low-lying areas or valleys where water naturally collects. Equally important is your soil type; clay-heavy soil drains slowly and tends to pool on the surface, while sandy soil drains too quickly, potentially depriving plant roots of moisture. A balanced loam is ideal, but if you have clay or silt, you will need to amend the soil or rely on structural solutions like French drains to manage the flow.

The most fundamental solution to poor drainage is adjusting the grade of your yard. Positive grading ensures that the ground slopes gently away from your home at a rate of roughly 6 inches over the first 10 feet. This creates a natural channel for water to flow toward a storm drain, ditch, or dry well, preventing it from settling around your foundation walls or patio.
When grading alone is insufficient, especially on flat terrain, installing a French drain is a highly effective method for redirecting subsurface water. This system involves digging a trench, laying a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel, and allowing water to seep into the pipe and flow to a lower exit point. A dry well offers a similar solution but is designed to capture and slowly disperse water into the surrounding soil, which is useful when you cannot find a suitable downhill exit.
Proper drainage depends heavily on selecting the correct materials. A washed stone, such as #57 or #89 gravel, creates stable voids that allow water to move freely toward the pipe while preventing the surrounding soil from clogging the system. You should also choose between a solid PVC pipe and a flexible corrugated pipe; while corrugated pipe is easier to install, PVC is more durable and less likely to collapse under the pressure of constant water flow.

Roof runoff is a common culprit in yard erosion. If your gutters overflow or leak directly onto the ground next to your foundation, no amount of yard grading will fully solve your积水问题. Extending your downspouts is a simple fix that channels water several feet away from the house, preventing the soil directly beside your home from becoming waterlogged and sinking.
Solving drainage does not have to mean sacrificing aesthetics. A dry creek bed or a landscaped swale can turn a problematic runoff path into a beautiful feature. By shaping the land into gentle, curving berms and channels, you can control the direction of water flow using river rocks and native plants. This method is particularly effective for managing water on slopes, turning erosion into an opportunity for creative hardscaping.
Even the most expertly installed drainage system requires occasional maintenance to function correctly. Leaves, silt, and organic debris can accumulate in gutters, downspouts, and catch basins, gradually reducing their capacity. You should inspect these systems at least twice a year—once in the spring and once in the fall—to ensure that water is still moving efficiently away from your property and that the ground remains dry where it should be.
