Standing water in your yard is more than just an eyesore; it creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, erodes your soil, and can eventually find its way into your home’s foundation. Installing a drainage tile system, also known as a French drain, is the most effective long-term solution to redirect this water away from your property. This process involves installing a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel to capture and channel subsurface water to a suitable exit point.
Before you break ground, meticulous planning is the difference between a project that succeeds and one that fails. You must first identify where the water is pooling and determine the ideal exit point, which is usually a lower grade area, a dry well, or a storm drain. Excavating without a clear plan often leads to redirecting water to a neighbor’s property, which can create legal issues and damage relationships, so verifying local zoning laws and utility lines is an essential first step.
To install drainage tile effectively, you need to understand what makes the system work. It is not just a pipe in the dirt; it is a carefully engineered collection of materials that work together to move water. Using the correct components ensures the system lasts for decades and functions regardless of weather conditions.

The heart of the system is the perforated drain pipe, typically a 4-inch diameter PVC or flexible corrugated pipe. The holes allow water to enter the pipe from the gravel surrounding it. This pipe is wrapped in a rugged geotextile fabric to prevent soil from clogging the perforations. The gravel, usually ¾-inch clear stone, creates a void around the pipe, allowing water to flow freely into the perforations while providing structural stability.
Executing the installation requires physical effort and attention to detail. You will be moving significant amounts of soil and stone, so ensure you have the right tools and, if the trench is deep, the necessary safety equipment for working in a trench.
Begin by marking the path of the trench with spray paint. The trench needs to slope downward at a minimum grade of 1% (roughly ¼ inch per foot) to ensure gravity pulls the water along. Dig the trench to a depth of at least 12 inches below the surface of the ground where you are placing the pipe. This depth ensures the pipe is below the root zone of grass and protected from accidental damage.

Once the trench is dug, spread a layer of gravel at the bottom. Lay the perforated pipe into the trench, ensuring the holes are facing down or slightly sideways to catch water from the surrounding soil. Wrap the pipe with the geotextile fabric, gathering the ends to create a sleeve. This sleeve acts as a filter, allowing water in while keeping silt and dirt out.
Carefully backfill the trench. As you shovel the gravel back into the trench, ensure it is evenly distributed around the fabric sleeve. After the gravel is level, pull the ends of the fabric up over the top layer of gravel. Then, begin refilling with the native soil. As you backfill, lightly compact the soil every 12 inches to prevent settling and ensure the area is level with the surrounding yard.
A drainage tile is only as good as its exit point. If you simply dump the water into a low spot in your yard, you will eventually have the same problem all over again. The water needs a definitive endpoint that handles the load without causing erosion or pooling.
In many residential settings, the best exit point is a storm drain or municipal storm sewer. You can extend a solid pipe from the exit point of your French drain into the storm drain grate. Alternatively, you can create a dry well, which is a pit filled with large stone that allows water to slowly seep into the surrounding soil, effectively dispersing the load and preventing surface pooling.
