Standing water in your yard is more than just an eyesore; it creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, damages your grass, and can eventually seep into your home's foundation. Before you call a professional, understand that many drainage problems are solvable with a well-placed yard drain. The process involves assessing the water's path, excavating a trench, and installing a system that redirects water safely away from your property.
You cannot fix a drainage issue until you understand where the water is coming from and where it wants to go. Observe your yard during the next heavy rain. Note the low-lying areas where water pools and the path it takes as it flows toward the street. The goal is to identify the highest point of the problem area, which is usually where you will need to install the initial catch point. If the water is coming from your gutters, consider extending your downspouts as a first step to move the flow away from the problem zone.
Not all yards require the same solution. The specific layout of your land and the severity of the water issue will determine whether a simple ditch, a dry well, or an underground pipe is the best approach. For a straightforward surface flow, a shallow gravel trench works well. For water that is seeping up from beneath the soil or pooling in a specific spot, a dry well—a pit filled with rocks that collects and slowly disperses water—is often the most effective solution.

Once you have decided on the type of drain, careful planning is essential to ensure the water flows downhill naturally. You need a slope, known as the grade, that allows gravity to do the work. The general rule is to aim for a drop of about 1 inch for every 8 feet of pipe. Measure the distance from the problem area to your intended exit point, such as a storm drain or a lower part of the yard, before breaking ground.
With the route measured, you can begin excavation. Dig a trench that is wide enough to work comfortably—usually about 12 inches wide—and deep enough to accommodate the pipe with a proper slope. For a standard French drain or surface drain, a depth of 12 to 18 inches is typical. Line the bottom of the trench with gravel to provide stability. Place a perforated PVC pipe in the trench, ensuring it maintains the necessary slope, and then pack the area around the pipe with additional gravel before covering it with soil.
If you opt for a dry well, the process involves digging a large hole rather than a long trench. Line the bottom and sides of the pit with a permeable landscape fabric to prevent soil from clogging the rocks. Fill the pit with clean gravel, leaving space at the top so the lid can sit flush with the ground. Water will collect in the rock chamber and slowly disperse into the surrounding soil, reducing surface pooling.

Before you start digging, you must contact your local utility locating service. Hitting a buried gas line, water main, or electrical conduit can be dangerous and costly. Additionally, check your local zoning laws to ensure that redirecting water on your property does not violate regulations or cause issues for your neighbors. Proper drainage should never direct water toward a shared fence line or an adjacent property where it did not previously flow.
Once the drain is buried and the trench is filled, restore the grass or lay sod over the area. While the system is hidden, it is not maintenance-free. Periodically check the exit point to ensure it is not clogged with debris. If you have a dry well, avoid dumping leaves or lawn clippings into the yard, as these materials can fill the rock pit and render the system useless. A little periodic care will ensure the drain functions efficiently for years to come.
