Standing water in your yard is more than just an eyesore; it creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, damages the health of your grass, and can eventually seep into your home's foundation. Solving this issue requires a fundamental understanding of how water moves across your property. Effective yard drainage is about working with gravity to redirect moisture away from problem areas, ensuring that your landscape remains healthy and structurally sound.
Before you grab a shovel, the most critical step is assessment. You need to observe your yard during and after a rainstorm to identify where water pools and where it flows. Look for the natural slope, or grade, of your land; ideally, the ground should gently slope away from your house at a rate of about one inch per foot for the first six feet. Ignoring this natural flow and installing drains or pipes that fight gravity will result in poor performance and a waste of resources.
Recognizing the symptoms of poor drainage is the first step toward a solution. These issues rarely appear overnight, and addressing them early can save you from costly foundation repairs later. The signs are often visual and persistent, appearing in the same spots every time it rains.

If your yard is flat or slopes toward your house, regrading is often the most effective long-term solution. This involves redistributing the soil to create a gentle pitch that encourages water to flow toward a storm drain, a dry well, or a low-lying area of your property. While labor-intensive, correcting the grade addresses the root cause of surface water accumulation.
For yards with heavy soil that retains water, a French drain is a highly efficient solution. This system involves digging a trench, placing a perforated pipe inside, and surrounding it with gravel. The gravel allows water to seep into the pipe while preventing soil from clogging it. The pipe then directs the water to a safe exit point, such as a drainage ditch or storm curb, effectively moving water away from vulnerable areas.
When you cannot redirect water to a lower grade on your property, dry wells provide an excellent alternative. These underground structures capture runoff and allow the water to slowly percolate into the surrounding soil. For areas where water collects quickly, such as near downspouts, installing a catch basin connected to underground piping can gather the water and transport it to a drainage exit.

Even the most expertly installed drainage system will fail if it is not maintained. Gutters and downspouts must be cleaned regularly to prevent clogs that could cause water to overflow and pool near your foundation. Additionally, you should periodically check your drains and pipes for blockages caused by roots or sediment. A simple visual inspection of your yard after a heavy rain will tell you if your system is working as intended or if adjustments are needed.
