How to Measure for Curtains for Bay Windows: Expert Step-by-Step Guide

Measuring for curtains on a bay window requires precision to accommodate the unique angle and depth of the space. Start by measuring the total width and height of the window frame, including any protruding ledges or trim. Use a flexible tape measure to follow the curve carefully, marking both the inside and outside edges for accurate coverage. Next, measure the overhang—typically 6 to 12 inches from the window frame to ensure the curtain falls gracefully without pooling on the floor. For multi-panel bay windows, measure each section separately and select curtains with matching seams and drape. Always add 2 to 4 inches to the width for proper fall and room for adjustment.

Once measurements are secured, use a level to confirm the window is plumb, as uneven windows affect curtain alignment. Choose a curtain rod or bar that extends slightly beyond the window’s outside edge to maximize coverage. Select fabric with appropriate weight for your bay window’s light exposure and room style—lightweight fabrics for bright, airy spaces, and heavier textiles for privacy and elegance. Proper measurement ensures curtains enhance your bay window’s architectural charm while providing comfort and style.

With precise measurements and thoughtful fabric selection, your curtain installation will transform your bay window into a stunning focal point that balances function and aesthetics effortlessly.

Accurate measurements are key to transforming a bay window into a beautifully framed focal point with custom-fit curtains.
