Crafting Industrial-Chic: DIY Bar Table Pipe Legs
Elevate your home bar or workshop with a DIY project that's as functional as it is stylish. Bar table pipe legs, made from repurposed pipes, offer an industrial-chic aesthetic that's perfect for modern and rustic spaces alike. Not only are they easy to make, but they're also incredibly sturdy and add a unique touch to your furniture. Let's dive into the step-by-step process of creating your own DIY bar table pipe legs.
Materials Needed
- Black iron pipe (3/4" or 1" diameter, depending on your table's weight and desired height)
- Pipe fittings (tees, elbows, and floor flanges)
- Pipe cutter or hacksaw
- Tape measure
- Pipe threading compound
- Wrench
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Rust-inhibiting primer and paint (optional)
Designing Your Pipe Legs
Before you start cutting and threading, plan the design of your pipe legs. Consider the height, width, and style of your table, as well as the overall aesthetic you're aiming for. For a simple, sturdy design, you can create four identical legs using tees and elbows. For a more complex look, incorporate crossbars or create a tripod-style base.
Calculating Pipe Lengths
Measure the desired height and width of your table, then subtract the height of the floor flanges (usually around 1.5"). Divide the remaining height by two to find the length of each vertical pipe section. For the width, divide the measurement by the number of horizontal pipes in your design. Write down these measurements for reference.

Cutting and Threading the Pipes
Using a pipe cutter or hacksaw, cut the iron pipe to your desired lengths. If you're using a pipe cutter, secure the pipe in the cutter's jaws, then rotate and squeeze the handles until the pipe is scored all the way around. Finish cutting by bending the pipe back and forth until it snaps. Deburr the cut ends with sandpaper to remove any sharp edges.
Apply pipe threading compound to the ends of your cut pipes, then thread them into the corresponding fittings using a wrench. Be sure to thread them tightly, but avoid overtightening, as this can strip the threads.
Assembling the Pipe Legs
Begin assembling your pipe legs by attaching the floor flanges to the bottom of each vertical pipe section. Next, connect the horizontal pipes using tees or elbows, depending on your design. Finally, attach the top of each leg to the table frame using additional fittings, such as another tee or a cross fitting.

Finishing Touches
If you prefer a finished look, sand any rough edges on your pipe legs, then apply a rust-inhibiting primer followed by paint in your desired color. Allow the paint to dry completely before attaching the legs to your table.
Attaching the Pipe Legs to Your Table
Position the assembled pipe legs under your table, ensuring they're evenly spaced and level. Mark the attachment points, then drill pilot holes and secure the legs to the table frame using screws or bolts. Once all legs are attached, your DIY bar table is ready for use.
Care and Maintenance
To keep your DIY pipe legs looking their best, wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap occasionally. If you've painted your legs, touch up any nicks or scratches as needed. With proper care, your industrial-chic bar table will be a stylish and functional centerpiece for years to come.
