Convert the space under a second-story deck into a dry, spacious patio by installing this simple, under deck ceiling and gutter system. This video provides instructions on how to install an under deck drainage system on a second story deck. A deck drainage system is designed to direct water away from your deck and into a gutter system below the deck.
In this video, we're installing Trex® RainEscape®, which is an over. Adding a drainage system under your deck can alleviate moisture issues. Read our guide on the necessary steps if you choose to do.
Water from the under-deck drain system is collected by a standard "K"-style aluminum gutter. When installing a system, the author typically oversizes the rim joist to accommodate the gutter. In this video I go over the gutter system I installed to collect the water.
I opted for the vinyl gutters for more flexibility and ease of installation. To install deck gutters, you will need to measure the length of your deck and then purchase the appropriate number of gutters and hangers. Once you have your materials, you can begin attaching the gutters to the deck using the hangers.
6 ATTACHING BOUNDARY GUTTERS Boundary gutters are used on the two edge joists at the two outer edges of the deck. The boundary gutter is installed by sliding the back wall of the boundary gutter behind the joist rails, pushing firmly upward until gutter rib locks into the rib on the back of the joist rails. Work your way to the end of the deck.
When the edge joist (boundary gutter) is attached. In case your deck is elevated, primarily if it is located on the second story, consider installing a DIY under-deck drainage system. It prevents water from passing the deck and pooling underneath it.
Instead, the water would be redirected into the gutters so that all the area beneath the deck would stay dry and usable. In addition, using a watertight gutter system makes it possible to waterproof under your deck. You can add an under.
The method for attaching a gutter system under your deck will vary depending on how your deck was constructed. You may need to attach additional boards to the edge of your deck so you have a continuous level surface to attach the gutter hangers.
