After the devastating tsunami of 2011, Japan faced a choice: rebuild what was lost, or reimagine its relationship with nature. What rose along nearly 396 kilometers of coastline was not just a barrier - but a living shield, a fusion of engineering and ecological prayer. Engineering Meets Ecology In building the so-called "Great Wall of Japan," engineers designed tall concrete barriers to reduce the force of incoming tsunami waves.
Alongside these, Japan's coastal planners incorporated a forest of millions of trees as a supplementary break: the dense roots and trunks are meant to slow storm surges and buffer wave energy before it strikes the sea wall. Japan's sea walls are a logical response to tragedy. Path on the top of the Hirokawa Embankment The Hiromura Embankment (広村堤防, Hiromura teibō) is an Edo period seawall on the Kii Channel coast in what is now part of the town of Hirogawa, Wakayama, Japan.
[1] It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1938. [2] It was built by Hamaguchi Goryō after the 1854 Ansei. In the. Presented by former Japan correspondent Mark Willacy, The Great Wall of Japan ravels along the north-eastern coast of Japan's main island to meet the fishermen and communities affected by one of. Ten years after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated the north-east region of Japan, a bigger, longer chain of seawalls now stands guard along the coastline in.
For example, environmental factors vary across a wall's surface [1]. Microclimatic differences can mean fluctuating conditions of heat and humidity or variance in wind stresses at the ends, corners, and tops of living walls. It can also mean degressive daylight.
An exaggerated example of this is on the "Chikusa-za" living wall in Nagoya, Japan (Fig. 1). Notice the zone.
Since the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated coastal villages in March 2011, extending and increasing the height and strengths of these seawalls has suddenly become high on the government's agenda. This article first looks at the background to seawall construction before and after 2011, then discusses one case study in particular.
