Kurinjal Peak Trek

Kurinjal Peak Trek

Three years back, I made a decision to embark on an annual monsoon ride. After exploring the captivating destinations of Gokarna and Kodachadri Hills in previous monsoons, I set my sights on Kuduremukha for the monsoons of 2023. Located 240 kilometers away from my hometown of Hangal in Karnataka, Kuduremukha National Park beckoned with its lush landscapes and untouched wilderness.

With eager anticipation, I began researching the stay options and activities in and around Kuduremukha. Although there were several private operators offering trips and adventures, I chose Bhagavati Nature Camp by Jungle Lodges and Resorts, a government property. Admittedly, I had reservations about government-run establishments, fearing they might lack excitement. However, little did I know that my experience would turn out to be quite the opposite.

On the 17th of June, in line with my plans, I set out on my Royal Enfield Himalayan early in the morning at 7 a.m., accompanied by my friend Praveen. The road leading to Kuduremukha was nothing short of awe-inspiring, as if the stunning scenery from my desktop wallpapers had come alive. By lunchtime, we reached Bhagavati Nature Camp, and our growling stomachs led us straight to the buffet spread. The delectable lunch was a feast for our taste buds.

Situated within the confines of Kuduremukha National Park, the camp offers an exclusive opportunity to dwell in the lap of nature. The absence of internet and network connectivity allows for a complete digital detox, enabling a tranquil experience amidst the serene surroundings. The camp serves as a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife, including peacocks, red lion squirrels, deer, various fish species, and even the majestic sambar deer, all freely roaming within the camp. With scenic views encompassing the camp, every moment spent here feels like a painting brought to life. The camp staff organizes thrilling adventure activities, ensuring an adrenaline-filled stay.

After satiating our hunger, we set out on a ride to explore the wonders of Kuduremukha National Park. During our ride, we stumbled upon a long, black snake basking in the middle of the road. Upon returning to the camp, we learned from the forest department officials that it was a Ptyas mucosa oriental ratsnake, commonly found in the region.

Our next adventure involved trekking, with the Kurinjal peak as our chosen destination. The trek spanned a distance of 14 kilometers each way. Following the park's strict regulations, we hired a guide who accompanied us throughout the journey. As we set off at 8:30 a.m., fueled by a delicious breakfast at the camp, we braced ourselves for what lay ahead.

Kuduremukha is renowned for its leeches, and we took precautions by applying odomos to our legs before commencing the trek. To reach the Kurinjal peak, we had to navigate through a stream, traverse dense forests, cross grasslands at high altitudes, and finally conquer a rocky terrain. As soon as we crossed the stream, we found ourselves enveloped in a thick forest, with the echoes of more than 20 creatures blending into a symphony. Dense forests are often the preferred habitat for leeches, and we encountered numerous leeches, with at least ten in every square meter. While diligently removing leeches from our shoes, we realized that a dozen more were making their way towards us.

Assured by our guide not to panic, we continued the trek, taking care to prevent leeches from entering our shoes. After a challenging three-kilometer trek, we emerged into a picturesque grassland. From this point onward, the breathtaking beauty of the Kuduremukha ranges unfolded before our eyes. The good news was that the grassland allowed more sunlight, resulting in fewer leeches.

While trekking through the grassland for another three kilometers, we were treated to magnificent vistas of the Kuduremukha ranges, standing parallel to the drifting clouds as a gentle drizzle descended upon us. It felt like a glimpse of heaven on Earth. As we ascended towards the peak, the climb became treacherous due to strong winds and steep rocks. In the interest of safety, we decided not to risk reaching the summit.

Settling on a boulder, we spent the next hour in quiet contemplation, immersing ourselves in the mesmerizing landscapes that surrounded us. It was a moment of tranquility, allowing us to connect with the raw beauty of nature.

In conclusion, my monsoon ride to Kuduremukha proved to be an adventure of a lifetime. From the unexpected charm of Bhagavati Nature Camp to encounters with wildlife and the thrill of trekking amidst nature's wonders, each moment was etched in my memory forever. Kuduremukha's allure lies not only in its scenic landscapes but also in its ability to captivate the spirit of every traveler seeking solace and serenity in the embrace of nature.
