Dettol Bath Horse

Is Dettol safe for horses? Don't add disinfectants like Savlon, Dettol or Jeyes fluid. These are ok for small, shallow wounds but can be caustic to most open wounds and damage the tissues - especially if used in higher concentrations (most people add more than needed!) Can you use Dettol as fly spray on horses? 5 caps of Dettol. 1 teaspoon each of lavender, tea tree, citronella, cedar wood.

Yep, big fan here! I dilute the dettol well in hot water, add a good slosh of Lavendar Wash (as it doesn't have to be rinsed out) and then I use a hot cloth to wipe over the horse. Really good for getting stable stains out of greys at the last minute too, I wouldn't be without it. I ended up spot bathing the area with a diluted dettol bath to get the scabs off.

Then I now check the area everyday for new scabs, if none, I wipe the area with a bit of diluted dettol. The idea is to expose the bacteria under the scabs (the bacteria is what causes it) and kill them. YO will often use diluted Dettol, makes a batch up in a bucket & sponges horses down with it.

It seems to work & has never caused a reaction on any of them, but if he's had reactions to things before then I'd do a patch test first. I think what fly spray works depends on the horse & the flies. I think my horse has lice, as he has very itchy patches on his chest, bottom of his flank and inside of his leg.

I want to bathe the areas tonight, would diluted dettol be safe to use? i will then apply sudocrem, and as soon as the weather is slightly warmer, I will be bathing him with. A horses coat is a very delicate thing and the protection it gives to the skin can be easily eroded. Dettol is a relatively safe dsinfectant but we are putting it to a use that it was not intended so we should be a bit cautious how we discuss it in public.

Dettol and vinegar does work quite well but it does not last long for turnout. Dettol is an irritant and a 50% solution is very strong I would not chance that on any of my fine skinned horses. We always used to use Jeyes Fluid for stables, though I've used Dettol as well.

I think I've used Dettol for buckets as well, none of the horses seemed to suffer any ill effects! But tbh for a good bucket scrub you can't beat fairy liquid. 250 ml of Avon Skin So Soft and Fresh bath oil (can be halved if midges are not bad, or your horse does not react to midges) 5 caps of Dettol 1 teaspoon each of lavender, tea tree, citronella. A bath followed by feeding oils and a thorough grooming routine and keeping the horse in a light rug would be more effective then washing chestnut / bay / black horses frequently.
