Emergency Room Design Guidelines

Before I get to behavioral health area design features, I want to share a story that shows how even the smallest details of an emergency department design can support greater safety for staff, clinicians, and other providers. The ACEM Emergency Department (ED) Design Guidelines are intended to support clinicians in the design process, and inform government, health planners, architects and designers about what constitutes a contemporary Emergency Department in Australasia. When patients visit an emergency department they are vulnerable, anxious, and in need of immediate care. By following emergency room design guidelines that focus on occupant safety, architects can do their part to ensure that the space is conducive to patient healing, with safety and efficiency.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE This document outlines Space Planning Criteria for Chapter 256: Emergency Department (ED). It applies to all Emergency Medicine clinical services in all medical facilities at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
