Should Resume Bullets Have Periods? Expert Guidance

Mastering resume formatting can make or break your job search—should resume bullets include periods? The right choice impacts readability and professionalism.

H2 Should Resume Bullets Include Periods?

The convention around periods in resume bullets is nuanced. While periods add clarity and formal structure, many modern resumes omit them for a cleaner, more modern look. The key is consistency: if you choose to use periods, apply them uniformly. Too few can make list items feel disjointed; too many may appear outdated. Prioritize clarity over rigid rules to ensure your achievements stand out.

H2 When Periods Improve Professionalism

Periods enhance readability by clearly separating distinct actions or outcomes in each bullet. For example, 'Delivered a marketing campaign that boosted sales by 30%' delivers a complete thought, making it easier for hiring managers to scan. This intentional punctuation supports scannability without sacrificing professionalism, especially in ATS-friendly documents.

H2 When to Omit Periods for a Polished Look

In contemporary resumes, omitting periods often creates a fluid, dynamic presentation. Bullet points without periods read faster and feel less cluttered. This style aligns with trends in modern hiring communication, where clarity and brevity are valued. Use periods only when emphasizing individual milestones—such as in executive summaries—while keeping body bullets concise and period-free.
