S BMW has been a leader in the luxury sports car market for decades. Two of their most popular models, the BMW Z3 and Z4, have garnered a reputation for high performance and exceptional style. I have a 2.8 roadster and an 3.0si coupe.
I would specifically recommend the 2.8 or 3.0 5spd z3 and the 3.0si z4 (e85/e86). Can't go wrong with either platform. Do you want a mechanical throttle body, limited slip diff, and hydraulic power steering? Or a newer platform with the e46 m3 6spd, more reliable engine, better fuel economy, etc.?
When you look at the BMW Z3 and Z4, one of the first things that catches your eye is the design. The Z3 made its debut in the mid-90s, showcasing a classic roadster look that many enthusiasts still adore today. Re: BMW Z3 vs. Z4: better or worse? Prior to 1999, Z3s lacked an electronic speed limitation. If you can find one, the 2.3 (which is a 2.5 engine) is a fantastic purchase.
Better interior design can be found in newer Z3. The Z4 before restyling is difficult to see behind, and it doesn't feel or appear as refined as the Z3. You have a far better chance of obtaining a newer Z4 with low miles.
