Unlocking the hidden space beneath your BMW F36’s ceiling starts with understanding how to safely remove the headliner—essential for detailing, upgrades, or custom builds. This guide delivers clear, actionable steps for a seamless experience.
Before beginning, gather essential tools like trim removal pry tools, flathead screwdrivers, and a utility knife. Ensure proper lighting and protect the dashboard with protective covers to avoid scratches. Start by disconnecting the battery to prevent electrical hazards. Carefully remove the center console trim to expose the headliner seams.
Begin at the rear center headliner panel, gently levering the fabric with a pry tool while supporting the surrounding trim. Work methodically forward, disconnecting wiring harnesses and fixing brackets only when fully detached. For F36 models, focus on the rear vent area and rear door panels—follow manufacturer guidance to avoid damaging airbags or sensors. Document each step with photos for reassembly accuracy.
Once removed, inspect all fasteners and wiring before reinstalling trim panels using original fasteners or high-quality alternatives. Test all electrical connections and ensure no debris remains. Reconnect the battery and verify full operation. This method ensures a clean, professional result with minimal risk to your F36’s interior integrity.
Mastering BMW F36 headliner removal opens doors to enhanced customization and maintenance. Whether preparing for detailing or modifications, this guide empowers you with confidence and precision. For optimal results, follow each step carefully—your F36’s interior deserves nothing less.

Misc things: A clean broom works great to remove the old foam, goes pretty quick. I always use the 3M adhesive that is sold for those god-awful 'landeau' tops instead of the headliner specific adhesive. It has a longer working time (pretty sure, been a while) and its designed to withstand much higher temperatures.
