However, when I removed my guibo, the bolts were in alternating directions with 3 pointed towards the engine and 3 pointed towards the rear of the car. I also noticed that they corresponded to these tiny arrows that were imprinted on the guibo itself and that these arrows were pointed in opposite direction to each other as they alternated. Remove the E46 driveshaft flex disc (purple arrow) from vehicle.

The Guibo has arrows on the edges that should be pointing toward the flanges, on my car they are pointing away from the flanges. Note there are arrows pointing both directions on the edge of the Guibo. I'm getting ready to replace my guibo, but I'm still confused about what direction the bolts go - mainly because of the pictures on the pelican parts DIY.
The original guibo has the arrows pointing at the flanges, but all the bolts are in the same direction. Flex Disc, aka the guibo, for E36, E46, Z3, and Z4 (See detailed fitments list below). The flex disc connects the driveshaft to the transmission and provides a buffer to absorb driveline vibrations.
The rubber flex disc takes the torque coming out of the transmission and delivers a seamless transition to the driveshaft. BMW recommends replacing the self-locking nuts, but I also like to replace the bolts if they happen to look like they have become slightly corroded. Take your new flex disc and attach it onto the driveshaft.
If you look closely at Figure 14, you will see that the flex disc has an arrow that is cast into the side of the rubber disc. I understand the down votes, but this guibo doesn't need the arrows. Now for e65 models and newer it makes a difference and if you look at the guibo you will see why.
The arrows and the direction they point are the way to confirm this. The guibo needs to be mounted so that the arrows are pointing to a flange arm. So the tip of the arrow needs to be against a flange, whether it is the drive.
The driveshaft flex-disc is also referred to as the guibo. Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.
