540i was great and I did agree for daily driving especially if you are not pushing your car like revving it over 4k, you won't see the difference. Once you push past 5k with sport mode, M5 is a clear winner. The M5 instead had the so called "M Sports suspension II" (E39 options code 705), identical to the option offered for the E39 V8 models 535i and 540i.
The front suspension is a dual. Does anyone else think it's weird that: The E39 M5 goes 0-60 in 5.0 seconds and just over 13 in the 1/4 mile The E39 540i/6 goes 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and 14.0 in the 1/4 mile ALL that extra horsepower in the M5, ALL the extra cost of M-specific parts, ALL the extra cost of fuel and bigger. The interior is tweaked, but M5 is hardly sportier than a 540i with the sport option.
The biggest difference between the two vehicles (by far) is due to: 1) engine displacement, induction and cams and 2) rear differential 3) exhaust configuration aft of cats As a result, the M5 is 3/4 of a second faster thru the traps.
