Building a Cabinet Drawer Box: A Comprehensive Guide
Creating a functional and stylish cabinet drawer box is a rewarding DIY project that can significantly enhance your storage space. Whether you're building new cabinets or replacing old drawer boxes, this step-by-step guide will help you construct a durable and well-fitting drawer box that meets your specific needs.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools on hand. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Plywood or MDF (for the drawer box)
- Wood glue
- 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" pocket hole screws
- 1/4" and 1/2" Brad nails
- Drawer slides (ensure they match your cabinet's size and style)
- Saw (circular saw, jigsaw, or handsaw)
- Drill and driver bits
- Pocket hole jig (like the Kreg Jig)
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Clamps
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional, for finishing)
Measure and Cut the Drawer Box Components
Accurate measurements are crucial for a well-fitting drawer box. Measure the interior dimensions of your cabinet, and subtract 1/2" from each dimension to account for the drawer box's thickness. This will give you the dimensions for your drawer box sides and bottom.

Cut the following pieces from your plywood or MDF:
- 2 - Drawer sides (width x height)
- 2 - Drawer front and back (depth x height)
- 1 - Drawer bottom (width x depth)
Create Pocket Holes for Stronger Joints
Using a pocket hole jig, create pocket holes on the inside edges of the drawer front, back, and bottom pieces. These pocket holes will allow you to attach the pieces together using screws, creating strong and secure joints.
Assemble the Drawer Box
Apply wood glue to the edges of the drawer sides and bottom piece. Align the drawer sides with the drawer bottom, ensuring the pocket holes are facing inward. Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.

Once the glue is dry, attach the drawer front and back pieces using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws. Ensure the drawer box is square by measuring the diagonals from corner to corner – they should be equal in length. If necessary, adjust the pieces slightly until the diagonals are equal.
Attach the Drawer Slides
Measure and mark the centerline of the drawer box's width and depth. Attach the drawer slides to the bottom of the drawer box, ensuring they are centered and flush with the bottom edge. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for attaching the slides, typically using screws or brad nails.
Finish and Install the Drawer Box
Sand any rough edges or surfaces, and apply your chosen stain or paint to finish the drawer box. Allow the finish to dry completely before installing the drawer box into your cabinet.

Install the drawer box by attaching the corresponding slides to the cabinet's interior. Ensure the drawer box is level and properly aligned with the cabinet opening. Once installed, test the drawer box's functionality, and make any necessary adjustments.
Building a cabinet drawer box may seem daunting at first, but with careful planning and attention to detail, you can create a functional and stylish addition to your cabinet. Happy building!
