Embarking on a DIY cabinet project can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Today, we're going to guide you through building a drawer base cabinet, perfect for your kitchen, bathroom, or home office. This step-by-step guide will ensure you create a functional and stylish piece of furniture that enhances your space.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to get you started:
- Plywood (3/4" thick, for the cabinet box and drawer)
- Pocket hole screws
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4", 1-1/2", and 2-1/2")
- Hinges
- Drawer slides
- Wood filler
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Primer and paint or stain
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
Measure and Cut the Cabinet Box Pieces
Start by measuring and cutting the pieces for your cabinet box. A standard base cabinet is 34.5" wide, 24" deep, and 34.5" tall. You'll need the following pieces:

| Piece | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Back | 34.5" W x 24" D |
| Bottom | 34.5" W x 23.5" D |
| Sides | 34.5" H x 23.5" D |
| Top | 34.5" W x 24" D |
| Front | 34.5" W x 23.5" D |
Use a circular saw to cut the pieces from your plywood. Ensure you label each piece for easy assembly.
Assemble the Cabinet Box
Now it's time to assemble the cabinet box. Apply wood glue to the edges of the pieces and use pocket hole screws to attach the sides to the back, bottom, and top. Then, attach the front piece, ensuring it's flush with the top and bottom. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Build the Drawer
For the drawer, you'll need a 1/2" thick piece of plywood for the drawer box and a 1/4" thick piece for the drawer face. Measure and cut the following pieces:

| Piece | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Drawer box (sides and back) | 11.5" W x 11.5" H |
| Drawer box (bottom) | 11.5" W x 10.5" D |
| Drawer face | 11.5" W x 12" H |
Assemble the drawer box using wood glue and screws. Attach the drawer slides to the inside of the cabinet and the drawer box. Ensure the drawer slides are level and flush with the top of the cabinet.
Prepare for Finishing
Before applying paint or stain, fill any holes or imperfections with wood filler. Allow the filler to dry, then sand the entire cabinet and drawer with 120-grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust, then sand again with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
Paint or Stain Your Cabinet
Apply a coat of primer to the cabinet and drawer, allowing it to dry. Then, apply your chosen paint or stain, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely between coats.

Attach the Hinges and Drawer Face
Once the paint or stain is completely dry, attach the hinges to the inside of the cabinet and the back of the door. Ensure the door is level and flush with the cabinet. Attach the drawer face to the front of the drawer box using screws.
Congratulations! You've successfully built a drawer base cabinet. Enjoy your new piece of furniture and the sense of accomplishment that comes with a job well done.
