How to Hang a Single Cabinet: A Comprehensive Guide
Hanging a single cabinet might seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a step-by-step approach, you can achieve a professional-looking result. This guide will walk you through the process, from measuring and planning to installation and leveling.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you start, ensure you have the following tools and materials:
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Level
- Stud finder
- Drill and appropriate drill bits
- Screwdriver (if using screws)
- Cabinet hardware (hinges, screws, and screws for mounting)
- Shims (if necessary)
Measure and Plan
Accurate measurement is crucial for a successful installation. Here's how to measure and plan:

- Measure the width and height of your cabinet to ensure it fits in your desired space.
- Determine the location of the studs in the wall using a stud finder. Studs are typically spaced 16 or 24 inches apart.
- Mark the location of the studs on the wall with a pencil.
- Measure and mark the location of the cabinet's mounting holes on the wall. These should align with the stud marks.
Prepare the Cabinet
Before hanging the cabinet, prepare it by attaching the hardware:
- Attach the hinges to the cabinet door according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the hinges are level and aligned with the cabinet's edge.
- If your cabinet has adjustable shelves, install them now.
Hang the Cabinet
Now that your wall and cabinet are prepared, it's time to hang the cabinet:
- Hold the cabinet up to the wall, aligning it with the marks you made earlier.
- Use a level to ensure the cabinet is plumb (vertical) and level (horizontal). Make any necessary adjustments.
- If the cabinet is not level, use shims behind the cabinet to level it. Mark the screw holes through the shims.
- Drill pilot holes at the marked locations using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screws you're using.
- Attach the cabinet to the wall using screws. If you're using bolts, insert them now and tighten with a wrench.
- Remove any shims you used and check that the cabinet is still level.
Test the Cabinet
Before you consider the job done, test the cabinet to ensure it's secure and functions properly:

- Gently open and close the cabinet door to ensure it operates smoothly and doesn't bind.
- Gently pull on the cabinet to ensure it's securely attached to the wall.
- If everything is functioning properly, you're done!
