Crafting a Custom Single Drawer: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating a single drawer might seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools, materials, and a bit of patience, you can craft a functional and stylish piece of furniture that perfectly fits your space. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, from planning to finishing, ensuring you create a drawer that's both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. For this project, you'll need:
- Plywood or MDF (for the drawer box)
- Solid wood (for the drawer front and sides)
- Wood glue
- Screws
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Hardware (drawer slides, handle, etc.)
- Tools: saw (circular or jigsaw), drill, screwdriver, tape measure, pencil, clamps, orbital sander
Measure and Plan
Start by measuring the space where you want to place your drawer. Decide on the dimensions of your drawer box, ensuring it's not too deep or too shallow for your needs. Consider the height of your drawer slides when determining the height of your drawer box.

Create a Cut List
Once you've decided on your dimensions, create a cut list. For a single drawer, you'll typically need:
- 2 pieces for the drawer sides
- 2 pieces for the drawer front and back
- 1 piece for the drawer bottom
For example, if you're making a drawer that's 18" wide, 12" deep, and 4" high, your cut list might look like this:
| Piece | Dimension |
|---|---|
| Drawer sides | 18" x 4" x 1/2" |
| Drawer front and back | 12" x 4" x 1/2" |
| Drawer bottom | 17.5" x 11.5" x 1/4" |
Cut Your Pieces
Using your cut list as a guide, cut your pieces to size with a saw. Ensure your cuts are straight and accurate for a smooth assembly.

Assemble the Drawer Box
With your pieces cut, it's time to assemble the drawer box. Apply wood glue to the edges of the sides and back piece, then attach the front piece. Clamp the assembly together and allow the glue to dry according to the package instructions.
Once the glue is dry, attach the drawer bottom using wood glue and screws. Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent the wood from splitting. Allow the glue to dry again.
Attach the Drawer Slides
Measure and mark where you want to attach your drawer slides. Typically, the slides are attached to the inside of the drawer box and the underside of the drawer front. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

Sand and Finish
Sand your drawer thoroughly, starting with 120 grit sandpaper and finishing with 220 grit. This will ensure a smooth surface for staining or painting. If desired, apply stain or paint to your drawer, allowing it to dry completely between coats.
Add Hardware and Enjoy
Attach the drawer handle or knob to the front of your drawer. Once complete, your single drawer is ready to use. Enjoy the satisfaction of having crafted a functional piece of furniture with your own hands!
