Crafting Sliding Drawers for Kitchen Cabinets: A Comprehensive Guide
Transform your kitchen cabinets into a space-efficient haven with sliding drawers. These ingenious storage solutions save space, reduce clutter, and add a sleek, modern touch to your kitchen. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create sliding drawers that fit perfectly into your cabinets.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Circular saw
- Jigsaw
- Drill and driver set
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Clamps
- Screws (1-1/4" and 1-1/2")
- Wood glue
- Plywood (1/2" and 3/4")
- Hardware: drawer slides, drawer pulls, and screws
Measure and Plan
Before you start, measure the interior of your cabinet to determine the size of your drawer. Subtract 1/4" from the width and height to account for the drawer slides. For example, if your cabinet is 18" wide and 12" high, your drawer should be 17.75" wide and 11.75" high.
Create the Drawer Box
Using your measurements, cut the following pieces from 3/4" plywood:

- Front: 17.75" W x 11.75" H
- Back: 17.75" W x 11.75" H
- Sides: 11.75" W x 17.75" H (2 pieces)
- Bottom: 17.75" W x 11.75" H
Assemble the Drawer Box
Apply wood glue to the edges of the side pieces and attach them to the front and back pieces using 1-1/4" screws. Ensure the drawer is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner and adjusting as needed. Then, attach the bottom piece.
Install the Drawer Slides
Choose full-extension, side-mount drawer slides for easy access to your entire drawer. Measure and mark the slide location on the inside of the cabinet and the outside of the drawer. Attach the cabinet-side slides using the provided screws. Align the drawer-side slides with the cabinet slides and attach them to the drawer.
Add Drawer Pulls
Measure and mark the location for your drawer pulls, typically 1-1/2" from the top and bottom of the drawer front. Attach the pulls using the provided screws.

Test and Adjust
Gently pull out the drawer to test the slides. If it's not smooth, check for any obstructions or misaligned slides. Make adjustments as needed until the drawer slides smoothly in and out.
Finishing Touches
Sand any rough edges, apply paint or stain, and let it dry. Once dry, install the drawer into your cabinet, and enjoy your new sliding drawer!
By following these steps, you'll have a functional and stylish sliding drawer that maximizes your kitchen cabinet space. Happy building!
