Why does my Farrow and Ball paint smell? It's all thanks to VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which come from the materials used to make paint and emit that "freshly painted" odor. While you can reduce the chance of this outcome by choosing a paint formula with low VOCs, fumes are often still detectable. As I get migraines from smells I did some testing of FB paints before having multiple rooms done.

The estate emulsion has minimal odor which dissipates within a couple of days. The modern emulsion STINKS. I was told by FB to use the modern emulsion as I have small kids and it wears better.

Surfactants (an ingredient that is used to stabilize paints liquid form) usually evaporate readily from the paint film when the drying conditions are good or they are locked into the paint film. I don't find farrow and ball to smell particularly, which is why I love working with them. I can't have gloss in the house as I am too sensitive to it.

20 odd years go Farrow & Ball were really good, but they have now become expensive paint for the same quality as Dulux. I've now stitched to Little Greene which is lovely stuff. Regardless of colour I find Farrow and Ball always needs three coats to build up the colour and the 'Farrow and ball' effect.
