Binding a quilt with mitered corners can add a polished, professional touch to your project. Mitering involves cutting and sewing the binding at a 45-degree angle, creating a neat, seamless corner. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you master this technique.

Before we dive in, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need your quilt, binding fabric (usually 2.5 inches wide), scissors or rotary cutter, a quilting ruler, a sewing machine, and pins or a binding clip.

Preparing the Binding
Start by cutting your binding fabric into strips. For a typical quilt, you'll need two strips, each about 2.5 inches wide and the length of two adjacent sides of your quilt.

Press the strips in half, wrong sides together, to create a crease. This will make it easier to sew the binding to your quilt.
Calculating Binding Length

To determine the length of your binding strips, measure two adjacent sides of your quilt. Add these two measurements together, then subtract the width of your binding (2.5 inches) twice. This accounts for the overlap at each corner.
For example, if your quilt is 60 inches by 80 inches, your binding strips should be (60 + 80) - (2.5 x 2) = 135 inches long.
Sewing the Binding Strips Together

With right sides together, sew the two binding strips together at one end, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.
Now you have one long binding strip that's the correct length for your quilt.
Attaching the Binding to the Quilt

Starting at one corner, place the raw edge of your binding along the raw edge of your quilt, right sides together. Align the binding with the top and side edges of the quilt.
Sew the binding to the quilt using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, stopping 1/4 inch from the corner.

Creating the Mitered Corner
At the corner, fold the binding up so the raw edges meet at a 45-degree angle. The fold should be along the crease you pressed earlier.
Sew across this fold, creating a neat mitered corner. Trim any excess fabric, if necessary.
Continuing the Binding
Unfold the binding and continue sewing it to the quilt, stopping 1/4 inch from the next corner. Repeat the mitering process at this corner.
Continue around the quilt, mitering each corner, until you've sewn the entire binding to the front of the quilt.
Finishing the Binding
Once you've sewn the entire binding to the front of the quilt, you'll need to attach the binding to the back. Fold the binding over to the back, enclosing the raw edge of the quilt.
Sew the binding to the back of the quilt using a ladder stitch or your preferred binding method.
Congratulations! You've successfully bound your quilt with mitered corners. This technique adds a beautiful, professional touch to your quilts. Happy sewing!
