Car suspension designer George Carwardine designed the Anglepoise lamp in 1931 and his design has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years.

The use of springs in the design meant that the Anglepoise can be repositioned easily without needing to be clamped into position. This made the lamps perfect for tasks where the light source would have to be constantly readjusted as the person using. This became the archetypal Anglepoise that we know today, and remained in production for over 30 years. The Anglepoise lamp is arguably the most successful desk lamp of the 20th century. The perfect combination of form and function, it was patented in 1932 by George Carwardine.

Key to the lamp's development was Carwardine's specialist spring design meaning the lamp would retain any position. The Anglepoise lamp was first designed in 1932 by a car designer called George Cardwardine. A freelance design consultant who specialised in vehicle suspension systems (yawn), Cardwardine did not have the usual architect background that many designers have.

After all, when you've created one of the world's most recognisable design classics, why change it? Now, Anglepoise lamps are in homes, offices, hotels and garden sheds all around the world, and they've even been passed on through generations. The beauty of the Anglepoise lamp lies in its utility. As product design goes, it's pretty spare - 'there's no part that's superfluous to its function' as the brand's fifth-generation owner, Simon Terry, once stated.
