Probably got the idea from that first version of the Super Mario Land manual artwork, which seems to use a dark green for outlining rather than black (and doesn't use a separate color for eye color, just the same green-black.). Coupled with the bigger size, only one eye is shown while Super Mario 64 Mario eyes had to be fit in a 32 x 32 square, thus making the eye even bigger by comparison.
