Elevate Your Space: A DIY Guide to Building a Lift-Up Coffee Table
Transform your living room into a multifunctional oasis with a DIY lift-up coffee table. This versatile piece of furniture not only serves as a stylish centerpiece but also provides extra storage and a convenient work surface. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of creating a stunning lift-up coffee table that's both functional and beautiful.
Materials and Tools Needed
Before you start, gather the following materials and tools:
- Plywood (3/4" thick, cut to 48" x 24" for the top and 18" x 24" for the sides)
- 2x4 lumber (for the legs, apron, and support frame)
- Hinges (2" overlay, full mortise, or European style)
- Gas-assisted lift supports (2)
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4", 2", and 2-1/2")
- Wood filler
- Sander and sandpaper (120-grit)
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Drill and driver bits
- Circular saw
- Miter saw
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
Design and Dimensions
For this project, we'll create a coffee table that's 48" long, 24" deep, and 18" tall. The lift-up top will be 16" x 22", providing ample workspace when raised. Customize these dimensions to fit your space and preferences.

Step 1: Cut the Pieces
Using a circular saw or miter saw, cut the plywood and 2x4 lumber according to the following dimensions:
| Piece | Dimension |
|---|---|
| Table top | 48" x 24" x 3/4" |
| Table sides | 18" x 24" x 3/4" |
| Legs (4) | 18" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" |
| Apron (2) | 48" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" |
| Support frame (2) | 16" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" |
| Lift-up top (2) | 16" x 22" x 3/4" |
Step 2: Assemble the Base
Attach the legs to the apron pieces using 2" screws, creating a rectangular frame. Apply wood glue at the joints for added strength. Allow the glue to dry before proceeding.
Step 3: Attach the Sides
Attach the table sides to the base using 1-1/4" screws. Ensure the sides are flush with the top of the apron.

Step 4: Build the Support Frame
Assemble the support frame using 2x4s and 2" screws. This frame will support the lift-up top and house the gas-assisted lift supports.
Step 5: Install the Gas-Assisted Lift Supports
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the gas-assisted lift supports onto the support frame. Position them so that the lift-up top will be centered when raised.
Step 6: Attach the Lift-Up Top
Attach the lift-up top pieces to the gas-assisted lift supports using screws provided with the lift supports. Ensure the top is level and centered.
Step 7: Install the Hinges
Install the hinges onto the front edge of the lift-up top and the corresponding edge of the table top. This will allow the lift-up top to fold down when not in use.
Step 8: Finish the Table
Fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, allow it to dry, and sand the entire table smooth with 120-grit sandpaper. Paint or stain the table as desired, and allow it to dry completely.
Congratulations! You've now created a stunning DIY lift-up coffee table that's both functional and beautiful. Enjoy your new multifunctional piece of furniture and the extra space it provides.
