Transform Your Coffee Table into a Stylish Bench: A Step-by-Step Guide
Ever thought of repurposing your old coffee table into a functional and stylish bench? This DIY project not only gives your furniture a new life but also adds a unique touch to your space. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to make a coffee table into a bench, complete with step-by-step instructions and expert tips.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Coffee table
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Wood glue
- L-brackets
- Pocket hole jig (optional, for stronger joints)
- Saw (hand saw, miter saw, or circular saw)
- Drill and driver bits
- Clamps
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional, for finishing)
- Polyurethane (optional, for protection)
Disassemble the Coffee Table
Begin by disassembling your coffee table. Remove the legs and any hardware using a drill. If your table has a glass top, be extra careful to avoid breaking it. Set aside the pieces you'll need for the bench, such as the tabletop and legs, and discard or recycle any unwanted parts.

Prepare the Tabletop
The tabletop will serve as the seat of your new bench. If it's not already flat, use a saw to trim any uneven edges. Sand the top and sides of the tabletop using 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots and prepare it for finishing.
Strengthen the Tabletop (Optional)
For added stability, you can reinforce the tabletop using an L-bracket and pocket hole jig. Drill pocket holes into the underside of the tabletop, then attach an L-bracket using 1-1/4" screws. This will help prevent the bench from wobbling.
Create the Bench Legs
Using the original coffee table legs as a template, cut four new legs from a 2x4 or 4x4 piece of lumber. Make sure the legs are the same height and width as the originals for a cohesive look. Sand the legs using 120-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

Add Support Braces (Optional)
For added stability, you can attach support braces to the legs. Cut two braces from a 1x4 or 1x6 piece of lumber, making sure they're long enough to span the width of the tabletop. Attach the braces to the insides of the legs using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws.
Assemble the Bench
With the tabletop and legs prepared, it's time to assemble your new bench. Apply wood glue to the top of the legs, then attach them to the underside of the tabletop using 2-1/2" screws. If you added support braces, make sure to attach them as well. Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries.
Finishing Touches
Once the glue has dried, remove the clamps and sand the entire bench using 220-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough spots. If desired, apply stain or paint to the bench to match your decor. Allow the finish to dry completely, then apply a coat of polyurethane to protect the bench from wear and tear.
Enjoy Your New Bench
Congratulations! You've successfully transformed your old coffee table into a stylish and functional bench. Place your new bench in your living room, entryway, or even on your porch to enjoy for years to come.
Don't forget to share your DIY bench with friends and family. Happy crafting!
