Most of us don't give a thought to a Janitor's Closet. We put a sink in a small room of 5'x5' and move on. Well there's a little more to it if you want the space to serve the building owner.
We learned what is really needed when we designed a supply warehouse for Banana Republic / The Gap. Housekeeping rooms or janitor's closets shall be provided throughout the facility as required to maintain a clean and sanitary environment, but not less than one housekeeping room/janitor's closet shall be provided for each floor in addition to the housekeeping room required in the facility dietary area. Each room has storage space for housekeeping equipment and supplies.
A service sink shall. The janitor's closet is home to all of the supplies needed to clean your facility, with cleaning products, equipment, and consumable products. Equipment -powered machinery.
Traditionally the custodial/janitorial closet is the area where these provisions are stored. The storage areas are generally small (hence the name "closet"), essentially with enough room for a deep sink or floor sink, a few shelves for supplies and materials, and enough storage for minimal tools and equipment. Like terms for a room where staff can take breaks, what the space is called may vary by person, by organization, and by facility.
In American English the room in your photograph would be commonly known as a janitorial/janitor's closet or room, or custodial/custodian's closet or room, storing equipment and supplies used by the cleaning staff. A janitor's room is typically a room used to facilitate cleaning services within a building. Customarily, this room may include facilities such as mop sink or sink, and limited storage.
The janitor's room is generally seen to be ancillary to the major occupancy of the floor area, as it may readily be shown that it does not form an integral part of the major use or occupancies of that building. The Janitor's Closet has four main requirements. First is shelf storage for supplies that the custodian will need in the course of doing his job.
Second is space to store the cart that the custodian uses. Third is extra floor space to store equipment. And fourth is the sink.
The sketch, which is our minimum standard (now), shows a room with dimensions of 9'-4" deep by 7'-4" wide. These. Housekeeping rooms or janitor's closets are essential for maintaining a clean and sanitary environment in a facility.
A minimum of one closet is required for each floor, including the housekeeping room required in the building. A janitor's closet should contain a floor receptor for mop water and provide space for minimal items such as mop buckets and brooms. It might be the smallest, overlooked room in the building, but a well-organized janitor's closet can make all the difference when it comes to efficiency, safety and cleanliness.
A custodian is only as organized as their janitor's closet, and maintaining a well.
