How to Remove Laminate Countertops from Cabinets: Step-by-Step Guide
Removing laminate countertops from cabinets doesn’t have to be a daunting task—with the right tools and technique, you can do it safely and efficiently, making way for a fresh update or refinish.
Step-by-Step Guide to Safely Remove Laminate Countertops
Begin by clearing the cabinet of all contents, then disconnect any overhead lighting or electrical fixtures above. Use a utility knife to carefully score along the edges of the laminate to loosen it from the cabinet edges. Work around corners gently, lifting the laminate in sections while using a putty knife or plastic scraper to separate it from the cabinet surface. For stubborn adhesive, apply heat with a hair dryer to soften the glue, then peel slowly. Always wear gloves and eye protection to avoid injury and dust inhalation. Once detached, inspect the cabinet for residual adhesive and clean with a mild solvent when removing fully.
Essential Tools and Supplies
Gather a utility knife for scoring, a putty knife or plastic scraper for lifting, heat gun for adhesive softening, rubber gloves, safety goggles, a tarp or drop cloth, and a clean cloth for dust and residue cleanup. Having the right tools ensures a smoother process and protects both your cabinets and skin.
Preparing for Reinstallation or Upgrade
After removal, assess the cabinet’s condition—repair any damage before installing new laminate or repainting. Proper cleaning and preparation guarantee a durable, professional finish. Consider applying a cabinet conditioner or sealant after removal to extend cabinet life and prevent future adhesion issues.
Removing laminate countertops is a manageable DIY project when approached with the right technique and tools. Follow these steps to protect your cabinets and enjoy a flawless transformation—ready to upgrade your space with confidence.
