Bmw Hydrogen Car Release Date

Yep, the iX5 Hydrogen will be BMW's first ever series production hydrogen car when it arrives in 2028. Of course, BMW has been using a fleet of X5s to test its fuel cell technology. BMW Chief Technology Officer Joachim Post is confident the iX5 Hydrogen will be a relevant model despite the slow uptake of hydrogen vehicles.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen Concept Vehicle can be refilled with gaseous hydrogen in approximately 3-4 minutes, much faster than a battery-powered electric vehicle. In addition, hydrogen filling stations are cleaner than traditional gasoline stations and don't leave a lingering odor of fuel on the driver or vehicle after refueling. BMW has confirmed its first hydrogen production car will be the iX5 Hydrogen, launching in 2028 after a million.

With millions of test kilometres successfully completed, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen is now set to enter series production. Its combination of range, efficiency and typical BMW driving pleasure makes the hydrogen SUV a suitable addition to the range of electromobility options. The iX5 Hydrogen will be BMW's first production model powered by the hydrogen and will use fuel.

The iX5 Hydrogen is already a credible vehicle, with smooth driving and a familiar X5 interior. However, this won't necessarily be the vehicle that BMW will launch in 2028. BMW's SUV lineup goes fully electric by 2026, with hydrogen iX5 arriving in 2028, followed by more fuel.

The next generation of BMW driving is already within view thanks to the latest global pilot project of the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Consisting of 100 vehicles, the fleet has been deployed across the globe with the purpose of demonstration and trialing, giving the public a rare opportunity to experience the huge potential of hydrogen for themselves. BMW has confirmed it will start mass production of its hydrogen drivetrains at Plant Steyr in Austria, putting a date on its third-generation fuel-cell system entering full-scale production in 2028.

Tooling is being installed, new assembly lines are being built, and BMW has put hydrogen firmly on its product roadmap.
