After rapid development, the Z3 was introduced in mid-1995 (as a 1996 model), and production began by September 1995. Notably, it became the first BMW mass-produced outside Germany, built at BMW's US plant in Greer, SC, to supply global markets. Instead, the Z3 was assembled at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, making it the first model in the firm's history to be entirely produced outside of Germany.

The Z3 was one of the first vehicles to roll out from BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant. Unveiled in the 1996 model year, the Z3's claim to fame was in its appearance in the James Bond movie, GoldenEye. Production on the Z3 continued until 2002 and was eventually replaced by the BMW Z4; which was showcased at the 2002 Paris Auto Show.
