"Easy DIY Console Table with Storage: Step-by-Step Guide"

Create Your Own Easy DIY Console Table with Storage

Are you looking to add a touch of elegance and functionality to your entryway or living room? A console table is a perfect addition, and with this easy DIY console table with storage guide, you can create a custom piece that suits your space and style. No need for expensive store-bought furniture or complex woodworking skills. Let's get started!

Gather Your Materials and Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools on hand. Here's a list to help you get started:

  • 1x12 pine board (8 feet long)
  • 2x2 pine board (8 feet long)
  • 1x4 pine board (8 feet long)
  • 2.5-inch pocket hole screws
  • 1.25-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-grit)
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Clamps
  • Drill with driver bits
  • Miter saw or circular saw
  • Pocket hole jig (like the Kreg Jig)

Design and Measure Your Console Table

First, decide on the dimensions of your console table. For this DIY project, we'll create a table that's 72 inches long, 16 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. You can adjust these measurements to fit your space, but keep in mind that the table should be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate a mirror or artwork.

Cut List

Using a miter saw or circular saw, cut the following pieces from your lumber:

Piece Dimension
Legs (4 pieces) 2x2 @ 30 inches
Top (1 piece) 1x12 @ 72 inches
Bottom shelf (1 piece) 1x12 @ 72 inches
Back support (1 piece) 1x12 @ 16 inches
Shelf supports (4 pieces) 1x4 @ 14 inches

Assemble the Legs and Back Support

Using a pocket hole jig, create pocket holes on the inside of each leg piece, about 1.5 inches from the top. These will be used to attach the back support. Apply wood glue to the pocket hole and back support piece, then clamp the back support to the legs, creating a rectangular frame. Use 2.5-inch pocket hole screws to secure the back support to the legs.

Add the Top and Bottom Shelf

Apply wood glue to the top and bottom edges of the leg assembly. Align the top and bottom shelf pieces with the legs, ensuring they overhang by 1.5 inches on each side. Clamp the shelves in place and use 1.25-inch wood screws to attach them to the legs. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Add Shelves and Finishing Touches

Measure and mark the locations for your shelf supports. They should be spaced evenly apart, about 4 inches from the top and bottom shelves. Use a drill and 1.25-inch wood screws to attach the shelf supports to the back support piece. Once the shelves are secure, you can add your desired stain or paint to finish the table.

Sand and Enjoy Your New Console Table

Lightly sand the table with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges or surfaces. Wipe away any dust, and your easy DIY console table with storage is ready to be placed in your entryway or living room. Add a mirror, artwork, or decorative objects to complete the look.

This simple and functional console table adds both style and storage to your space. With just a few basic tools and materials, you can create a custom piece that fits your needs and complements your home's decor. Happy building!
