At its core, Tetra Tower is a game about building the tallest tower using tetromino-shaped tiles. Players compete to place these tiles strategically, aiming to control the most valuable areas of the tower while hindering their opponents. The game's objective is to score the most points by occupying prime locations and completing sets of colored tiles.
Game Components and Setup
The Tetra Tower game box includes:
- 1 Game Board
- 4 Player Mats
- 160 Tetra Tiles (40 of each color)
- 4 Player Markers
- 1 Scorepad and Pencil
To set up the game, place the game board in the center of the table. Each player selects a color and takes the corresponding player mat, marker, and 40 tetromino tiles. The scorepad and pencil are shared among all players.
Tetromino Tiles
Tetra Tower uses five different tetromino shapes, each composed of four squares. These shapes are:
- I (Line)
- O (Square)
- T (T-shape)
- S (S-shape)
- Z (Z-shape)
Each player starts with a hand of 10 tetromino tiles, drawn randomly from their color's supply.
Game Board
The game board represents the Tetra Tower, consisting of a 6x6 grid divided into 36 squares. The grid is further divided into nine 2x2 sections, each representing a different scoring zone. The center four squares form the 'Tower Core,' a high-scoring area with unique placement rules.
Gameplay
Tetra Tower is played over several rounds, with each round consisting of three phases: Place, Score, and Draw.
Place Phase
During the Place phase, players take turns placing one tetromino tile from their hand onto the game board. Tiles must be placed so that they connect to at least one other tile of the same color already on the board. Players can rotate and flip their tiles as needed to fit them onto the board.
Players cannot place tiles in the Tower Core unless they have at least one tile of each color already on the board. Additionally, players cannot place tiles that would result in a 'floating' tile (a tile not connected to any other tile).
Score Phase
After all players have placed their tiles, the Score phase begins. The game board is scanned for completed sets of colored tiles. A set consists of four tiles of the same color connected to each other. Each set is worth 1 point, and the player who placed the most tiles in the set scores the point.
If a player has completed sets in multiple scoring zones, they score points for each zone. In case of a tie, the player who placed the most tiles in the highest-scoring zone wins the tiebreaker.
Draw Phase
Finally, during the Draw phase, each player draws one new tetromino tile from their color's supply. If a player has fewer than 10 tiles in their hand, they draw enough tiles to reach 10.
Endgame and Scoring
The game ends when one player has scored 20 points or when the game board is completely filled with tetromino tiles. In case of a tie, the player with the most tiles in the Tower Core wins the game.
