How to Hang Curtains for Bay Windows: Step-by-Step Guide

Bay windows create inviting spaces with natural light and depth, but hanging curtains correctly can transform them from functional to stunning. Mastering the technique ensures elegant draping that enhances your bay window’s beauty.

Start by measuring the full width of your bay window, including window sills, ledges, and overhangs. Add 2-4 inches on each side for proper draping. Use a level to mark even lines, and mark anchor points at the top, bottom, and center to align curtains horizontally. Choose fabric with stretch for ease of fitting, and pre-wash to avoid shrinkage.

For a classic look, hang curtains so the top edge meets the window’s outer frame. Use sturdy curtain rods anchored to wall studs behind the window, securing hooks or clips to prevent sagging. Fold or gather curtains at the bottom to create soft layers, and opt for a longer rod to allow full coverage—trim excess only after testing drape. Consider layering sheer and opaque fabrics for light control and depth.

Choose curtains with texture or pattern to complement your bay window’s architectural details. Use contrasting rod ends or decorative tassels for a polished finish. Ensure curtains frame the window without blocking light—adjust tension for a balanced, airy appearance. Well-draped curtains not only enhance aesthetics but also add privacy and warmth to your space.
