Crafting a Timeless Veil with Tulle: A Step-by-Step Guide
Embarking on the enchanting journey of creating your own veil with tulle? You're in the right place. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process, from selecting the perfect tulle to adding the final touches. Let's dive in and create a veil that's as unique as you are.
Understanding Tulle: The Star of Your Veil
Tulle, a lightweight, net-like fabric, is the backbone of your veil. It's available in various densities, from sheer to opaque, and widths, typically ranging from 54" to 108". For a classic veil, opt for a 54" width, which is easy to handle and provides a beautiful, soft drape. Choose a density that complements your wedding dress - lighter tulle for delicate dresses, and heavier for more robust ones.
Gathering Your Materials
- Tulle (quantity depends on your veil's desired length and fullness)
- Veiling wire or comb (for securing the veil)
- Scissors
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Chalk or fabric marker
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine with a narrow foot (optional, for gathering)
- Thread matching your tulle
Measuring and Cutting Your Tulle
First, decide on your veil's length. A popular choice is a fingertip-length veil, which reaches the knuckle of your first finger when your arm is extended. Once you've decided, add an extra 2-3 inches for the hem and your chosen veil edge finish (like a scallop or lace trim). Measure and cut your tulle to this length.

Creating the Veil Edge
Hemmed Edge
For a simple, elegant look, create a hem by folding the bottom of your tulle up 1/2" twice, then press with an iron. Stitch in place, close to the inner fold.
Scalloped Edge
To create a scalloped edge, draw scallop shapes along the bottom of your tulle, 1/2" from the edge. Cut along the lines, then fold and hem as above.
Securing the Veil
Mark the center of your tulle with a pin, then measure and mark 3-4" on either side for your veil wire or comb. Stitch the wire or comb in place, ensuring it's secure but not too tight.

Gathering the Tulle (Optional)
For a fuller veil, gather the tulle along the top edge. You can do this by hand, or use a sewing machine with a narrow foot and long stitch length. Once gathered, stitch in place, spacing the gathers evenly.
Adding the Finishing Touches
If you've chosen a lace or beaded trim, stitch it along the bottom edge of your veil. For a simple, elegant look, you can also add a small bow or flowers at the center of the veil.
Wearing Your Veil
Secure your veil to your hair using the veil wire or comb. For added security, you can also pin the veil to your head or use a headband. Enjoy your beautiful, handmade veil!
