Toyota Hydrogen Engine Concept

Toyota has envisioned a hydrogen-powered future, and its commitment to making hydrogen combustion engines is a testament to that. In 2023, the hydrogen-engine Corolla completed a demonstration lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe, while a hydrogen engine concept car, the GR H2 Racing Concept, was presented to preview a potential future hydrogen category at Le Mans. Since then, development of the technology intensified, reaching a new milestone with the unveiling of the liquid hydrogen.

At a press conference of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) at Circuit de la Sarthe in western France on June 9, Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda revealed for the first time the hydrogen engine vehicle prototype "GR H2 Racing Concept". TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has unveiled the GR LH2 Racing Concept, a liquid hydrogen (LH2) fueled test car to advance the development of hydrogen technology in motorsports. It made its public debut at the Circuit de la Sarthe where it is being exhibited at the H2 Village, organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, during the 93rd Le Mans 24 Hours (11-15 June).

Toyota is moving forward with hydrogen combustion technology, unveiling a new prototype designed for future competition in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This innovation builds on Toyota's deep expertise in hydrogen fuel cell technology, honed over years of research and product development. With this new internal combustion design, Toyota may bridge the gap between traditional engines and fully electric powertrains, offering yet another route to sustainable transportation.

The GR H2 was a static concept, but the GR LH2 is a running test car. Nakajima noted that Toyota has been pushing to introduce hydrogen as energy while maintaining a racing engine's noise. Toyota has introduced the world's first water engine, operating at an astonishing 2500 ºC and equipped with a revolutionary dual injection system.

This development could redefine the future of green transportation, challenging the dominance of hydrogen and electric vehicles.
