Toyota Japan Earthquake

On March 11, 2011, just two days after announcement of the Toyota Global Vision, a massive earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred with an epicenter off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at 2:46 in the afternoon. The number of fatalities and missing was 19,009 (as of March 11, 2012, according to the National Police Agency), and this unprecedented disaster came to be known as the Great East Japan. The Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated the Tōhoku region, leading to disruptions in the supply chain.

Toyota, like many Japanese automakers, heavily depended on suppliers from this region. After the March 2011 Japan natural disaster, Toyota declared that it had built an 'earthquake-proof' supply chain. This claim was sounded severely to the test in the April 2016 Kumamoto tremors.

The biggest earthquake to hit Japan since officials began keeping records in the late 1800s, and one of the biggest ever recorded in the world unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Toyota is halting vehicle assembly across Japan due to earthquake disruptions at an auto-parts supplier, a move that recalls prior supply-chain interruptions. Above, the auto maker's Motomachi.

Toyota would like to express our deepest condolences and sympathies to all those affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. In response to the situation, Toyota Motor Corporation has decided to provide the following emergency aid. The Great East Japan Earthquake The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 caused massive damage in Tohoku and other regions, and had an impact on many Japanese companies.

Many of Toyota's suppliers are located in Tohoku and eastern Kanto, and this resulted in a temporary halt of production at its domestic vehicle. Given the scenarios presented above, the effects of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March could present 6% downside to our base case price estimate of $80.29 for Toyota stock, pushing. In the former radiation zone near Japan's infamous Fukushima nuclear disaster site, Toyota and other automakers are placing a big bet on a better future with cleaner fuels.
