Are 'forever chemicals' in my water?
The Environmental Protection Agency recently rescinded limits on four forever chemicals: PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and HFPO-DA (GenX chemicals). This map shows how recent samples from public drinking water systems that detected these chemicals compare to the abandoned limits.
Altogether, 1,531 water systems serving over 84 million people found any amount.
Detected below limit 1,371 water systems serving about 73.5 million people detected these four PFAS chemicals at levels below the limits.
Detected over limit 113 systems serving about 6.6 million people detected them above the limit at least once.
Average results over limit 47 systems serving nearly 4 million people measured over the newly rescinded limit when an entire year’s test results were averaged. These utilities likely would have needed to install filtration or find new water sources.
