The newest E36 is now more than 25 years old at this point, so it really comes down to how an individual vehicle was maintained. But overall I would say that if you can find a well cared for example that an E36 (excluding the M3) could be a decent first car. They aren't so powerful that you'll get in trouble and they are fun to drive.
