Why Is My Wooden Floor Bulging? Causes & Fixes

Walking across your living room, you notice a gentle, unsettling wave under your feet. What was once a flawlessly smooth wooden floor now feels like a slow, wooden wave. This bulge is not just an aesthetic issue; it is a critical warning sign that your floor’s environment has been disrupted. Understanding the mechanics behind why wood expands and contracts is the first step in diagnosing and solving this problem.

Wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning it actively breathes and reacts to the moisture levels in the air. Unlike engineered materials, solid wood seeks equilibrium with its surroundings. When the relative humidity in your home rises, the wood fibers absorb moisture and expand. Conversely, when the air is dry, the fibers release moisture and shrink. A bulge typically occurs when this natural expansion is restricted, trapping moisture within the wood and forcing it to push upward and outward.

Common Culprits: Moisture and Humidity

Spills and Leaks

The most immediate cause of localized bulging is trapped liquid. A forgotten glass of water, a leaking pipe under the kitchen sink, or a pet accident soaked into the planks can introduce significant moisture to a specific area. Even if the surface is dried immediately, the liquid often migrates between the grains or subfloor, causing the wood to swell. Because the drying process is uneven—perhaps the top layer dries while the core remains damp—the board is subjected to stress, resulting in a permanent deformity known as "cupping" or "crowning."

Ambient Humidity Swings

More often than not, the issue is environmental. During the wet season, the humidity in the air increases, causing the wood to absorb moisture and expand. If the boards were installed tightly against the wall or another immovable object, they have nowhere to go but up. This widespread expansion creates the classic "belly" in the floor. Conversely, if a humidified home in winter suddenly loses heat and moisture (such as during a vacation), the boards may shrink and gap; upon returning and humidifying the space, the rapid re-expansion can also cause stress and buckling.

Installation and Material Errors

Insufficient Expansion Gaps

Wood requires space to move. During installation, a professional leaves a gap between the edge of the floor and the wall to accommodate movement. If this gap is too small or, worse, filled with rigid filler that prevents the wood from expanding, the floor will buckle under pressure. This is a very common reason for bulging, particularly in rooms exposed to moisture, like basements or bathrooms, where the dimensional change is more aggressive.

Acclimation Neglect

Before installation, wooden planks must acclimate to the environment of the home. This process allows the material to adjust to the specific temperature and humidity levels where it will live. Installing wood straight from the dark, cool warehouse into a warm, humid living room causes shock. The planks will immediately start absorbing moisture, and if they were nailed or glued too tightly during this transition, the resulting tension can buckle the entire surface.

Subfloor and Underlayment Issues

Compromised Base

The foundation of a floor is the subfloor. If the subfloor—whether plywood or concrete—has absorbed moisture, it can swell. When the base rises, the floor installed on top of it has no choice but to bulge upward. This is often seen in areas with poor ventilation, such as crawl spaces, or in homes that have experienced flooding where the subfloor was not properly replaced or dried. Additionally, an underlayment that does not allow for vapor transfer can trap moisture against the wood, acting like a sponge beneath the boards.

Improper Fastening

How the floor is secured to the subfloor dictates its stability. Nails or screws that are too long, or glued-down adhesive that is applied unevenly, can create points of immense internal stress. If the fasteners are driven too tightly, preventing natural movement, the force has to go somewhere, usually resulting in a buckle or a raised hump in the middle of the room.

Assessing the Severity and Solution

Identifying the Source

To fix the issue, you must play detective. Look for visible signs of water damage near appliances or sinks. Check the baseboards for gaps that might indicate general home humidity levels. Use a moisture meter to test the moisture content of the wood; readings significantly higher than the manufacturer’s recommended level indicate a drying problem. If the bulge is recent and localized, a leak is likely. If it is widespread and gradual, humidity control is usually the culprit.

Restoration Strategies

The path to repair depends entirely on the cause. If a leak is the source, drying the area thoroughly with dehumidifiers and fans is critical before any repair is considered. Sometimes, the boards must be physically removed to allow air to circulate underneath. Sanding and refinishing can help smooth minor waves if the wood has returned to its moisture equilibrium. However, if the boards have permanently separated from their glue bond or if the subfloor is compromised, replacement of the affected planks—or the entire floor system—may be the only viable solution to restore a level surface.
