WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:05.120
Welcome back. In this video we will talk about editing and grouping objects in our timeline.

00:05.840 --> 00:09.520
So if you will please scroll down and open up step 11 groups.

00:16.160 --> 00:21.760
And I will go ahead and hide my data panel and let's look at the timeline at the bottom of our screen.

00:23.600 --> 00:28.720
We can see all of our features here on the timeline and it is representing the entire

00:28.720 --> 00:36.320
chronological order of our build. I can go to here and play my timeline and it will show me every

00:36.320 --> 00:45.760
step of building this lamp. This can sometimes be fun to do when looking at how your model was built.

00:45.840 --> 00:59.200
In our next workshop we will talk about editing features in our timeline which is part of

00:59.200 --> 01:06.240
Fusion's parametric design properties. But for now we can see that we can simply drag our timeline

01:06.960 --> 01:13.520
anywhere in between our features to see what a still snapshot of that part of our design looks like.

01:16.560 --> 01:24.800
However, when working in larger projects the timeline can sometimes run off the side of the screen.

01:26.000 --> 01:32.960
In order to keep our timeline organized we can utilize groups. How do we know which features in

01:32.960 --> 01:39.680
our timeline reference which features in our model? Well if you hover over a feature you will see

01:39.680 --> 01:44.240
the impacted geometry highlight in a dark color.

01:51.440 --> 01:59.760
Also if we go to inspect component color cycling toggle this applies a color to each component

01:59.760 --> 02:08.560
in our model. Now I can see that all of these features reference the base. These features reference

02:08.560 --> 02:16.960
the arm, these features reference my lampshade arm and so on. You can see that we have groups in our

02:16.960 --> 02:25.440
model already which reference multiple features in our model. These were automatically created when

02:25.440 --> 02:32.160
we imported and broke the links of our fastener assemblies. Let's go to the timeline and begin to

02:32.160 --> 02:38.640
create some groups. I can see that one group will be from this base component creation all the way

02:38.640 --> 02:46.240
to this fillet. So with the shift key held down I will select this feature and this feature to

02:46.240 --> 02:52.960
select all features in between. I can now go right click create group and we can see that those

02:52.960 --> 02:58.800
features have now been collapsed into a group that we can expand by hitting the plus icon and

02:58.800 --> 03:06.160
collapse by hitting the minus icon. Let's continue creating groups throughout our model. I will

03:06.160 --> 03:16.480
create a group that goes from here to here which includes our lampshade arms. Next I'll create a

03:16.480 --> 03:26.560
group that goes from here to here which is our arm assembly and lampshade arm.

03:28.880 --> 03:36.320
I'll select all of my joints and create a group and you'll notice that if I try to select a group

03:37.680 --> 03:44.960
and other features I cannot create a nested group. The fusion timeline only allows a feature to

03:44.960 --> 03:52.160
be in one group. So I will have to select these three items right click create group and then I

03:52.160 --> 03:59.680
can continue. I'll select these joints and features and select my entire lampshade

04:03.200 --> 04:14.000
and finally these three joints. This rigid group is all alone so I can include it in this lampshade

04:14.000 --> 04:20.960
group. I first need to right click delete and we will see this group delete option. I can either

04:20.960 --> 04:27.040
delete the group and expand its contents, delete both the group and its contents or cancel. I will

04:27.040 --> 04:34.160
delete the group and expand its contents to keep all features in the model. Now I can include that

04:34.160 --> 04:41.120
rigid group, right click create group and our timeline is now well organized into a series of small

04:41.120 --> 04:48.480
groups that I can hover over to see which features they apply to and expand them as I need.

04:51.840 --> 04:57.840
Using groups in your timeline keeps your timeline short and concise and using component color

04:57.840 --> 05:03.760
cycling to help understand which features went to which component is a useful workflow when

05:03.760 --> 05:12.320
working in large projects. I will go inspect and turn off component color cycling and save my file.

05:14.800 --> 05:19.360
We can see that there is one more step and this is simply the final step

05:20.640 --> 05:25.840
which I've provided to make sure that your file looks like our file at the end of the progress

05:26.640 --> 05:32.800
if you worked alongside. If you open up that file and hide your data panel

05:35.600 --> 05:40.960
you will see our lamp with the appropriate joints. Our timeline will have all of the groups

05:41.600 --> 05:45.920
and we can edit our lamp and move it into a different position as we need.

05:47.840 --> 05:54.560
Feel free to experiment by placing the light bulb in your file and using a joint to place it in

05:54.560 --> 06:06.000
the socket. I hope you enjoyed this Fusion 360 workshop and you can find more like it

06:06.000 --> 06:13.200
