Create Space and Style: Build Your Own Murphy Table
In today's world, space is a premium commodity, especially in urban homes and apartments. One ingenious solution to maximize your living space is by building a Murphy table, also known as a wall bed table. Not only does it save space, but it also adds a unique charm to your home. Understanding Murphy Tables

- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- Hinges (4 heavy-duty, full-arm cabinet hinges)
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Wall mounting hardware
Planning Your Murphy Table
Before you start building, you need to plan the size of your Murphy table. Consider the space you have available and the size of the tabletop you want. A common size is 48" wide x 30" deep, but you can adjust these measurements to fit your needs. Once you have your dimensions, you can create a cut list and sketch out your design.
Building the Table Frame
Start by building the frame that will support your tabletop. Cut four pieces of 2x4 lumber to create the sides and top of the frame. Assemble the frame using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner and adjusting as needed.
Attaching the Tabletop
Cut your plywood tabletop to size, making sure it's slightly smaller than the frame to allow for movement. Attach the tabletop to the frame using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. Ensure the tabletop is flush with the top of the frame.
Installing the Hinges
Measure and mark where you want the hinges to be placed on the back of the table frame and the wall. Ensure the hinges are level and evenly spaced. Attach the hinges using screws, following the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the hinges are fully extended and the table is level before securing them in place.
Mounting the Murphy Table to the Wall
Using the wall mounting hardware, secure the Murphy table to the wall. Ensure the hardware is securely fastened to a stud or use appropriate wall anchors. Once the table is mounted, test the folding mechanism to ensure it works smoothly and the table locks into place when folded up.
Finishing Touches
If desired, sand any rough edges and apply paint or stain to your Murphy table. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the table. With your new Murphy table, you've not only added functionality to your space but also a unique, stylish piece of furniture.
