Transform Your Space: DIY Murphy Craft Table
Are you craving a dedicated craft space but struggling with limited room? A DIY Murphy craft table could be the perfect solution! Materials Needed
- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- 2x2 lumber (8' long)
- 1x2 lumber (8' long)
- Pocket hole jig and screws
- Wood glue
- Hinges (4) and screws
- Latch and handle
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Sandpaper
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Clamps
Design and Measurements
Before you start cutting, decide on the size and layout of your Murphy craft table. For this guide, we'll assume you want a table that's 48" wide, 24" deep, and 30" tall when folded down. You'll also want to include storage for your craft supplies. Here's a suggested layout:

Cutting the Pieces
Using your circular saw, cut the plywood and lumber according to the measurements above. You'll need to cut:
- 2 table tops
- 2 table supports
- 4 legs
- 1 storage shelf
- 1 back panel
Assembling the Table
Table Frame
Using your pocket hole jig, drill pocket holes on the inside edges of the table supports. Attach the table supports to the table top using wood glue and pocket hole screws. Reinforce the corners with clamps while the glue dries.
Legs and Storage Shelf
Attach the legs to the inside of the table frame using wood glue and screws. The legs should be flush with the bottom of the table top. Attach the storage shelf to the back of the table frame, centered and about 6" from the bottom.
Back Panel
Attach the back panel to the back of the table frame using wood glue and screws. This panel will help stabilize the table when it's folded down.
Adding the Hinges
Attach two hinges to the top of the table frame and two hinges to the bottom. The hinges should be spaced evenly apart and aligned with the back edge of the table. Make sure the hinges are facing the right way – the table should fold down towards the wall.
Installing the Latch
Install a latch and handle on the front of the table, about 6" from the bottom. This will keep the table secure when it's folded down.
Finishing Touches
Sand any rough edges, then paint or stain your Murphy craft table as desired. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the table.
Now that your DIY Murphy craft table is complete, you can mount it to the wall using heavy-duty wall brackets. When you need your craft space, simply fold the table down and get to work. When you're done, fold the table back up against the wall to free up your floor space. Happy crafting!
