Transform Your Space: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Murphy Desk

- Latch mechanism

Design and Measure Your Murphy Desk
First, decide on the desk's dimensions. A standard desk is about 30" deep and 60" wide, but you can adjust these measurements to fit your space. Cut the Components

- Two shelf pieces (12" x 24")
Assemble the Desk Frame
Using your pocket hole jig, drill two pocket holes into each end of the side supports. Attach the side supports to the back panel using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, ensuring the desk is square. Then, attach the shelf supports to the inside of the side supports, about 12" from the bottom, using 1-1/4" wood screws.
Install the Shelves and Desk Top
Attach the shelf pieces to the shelf supports using 1-1/4" wood screws. Next, attach the desk top to the side supports using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws. Plug and sand the pocket holes for a clean finish.
Attach the Hinges and Latch Mechanism
Mark the hinge placement on the back of the desk top and the wall. Attach the hinges to the desk top and wall using the provided screws. Ensure the hinges are level and aligned properly. Install the latch mechanism according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Mount Your Murphy Desk
With the help of another person, carefully lift the desk and align it with the hinges on the wall. Secure the desk to the wall using the screws provided with the hinges. Test the desk by lifting it up and letting it down to ensure it operates smoothly.
Finishing Touches
Sand any rough edges, fill any holes with wood filler, and paint or stain your Murphy desk to match your room's decor. Once dry, your new Murphy desk is ready to serve as a functional workspace and a stylish addition to your home.
