Build a Space-Saving Murphy Bed: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transform your room into a multi-functional space with a simple Murphy bed. This ingenious furniture piece folds up into the wall, freeing up floor space when not in use. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you build a simple Murphy bed that's both functional and stylish.
Materials Needed
- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- 2x6 lumber (8' long)
- 2x8 lumber (8' long)
- Hardware: European-style hinge, gas lift support, and mounting hardware
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Wood glue
- Paint or stain (optional)
Tools Required
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Jigsaw
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Clamps
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Design and Measure
First, decide on the size of your Murphy bed. A standard twin or full-sized mattress will fit most rooms. Measure the height and width of your mattress, then add a few inches for clearance. Sketch out your design, including the bed platform, backrest, and mounting hardware.
Step 2: Cut the Plywood
Using your circular saw, cut the plywood according to your design. You'll need two pieces for the bed platform (approximately 48" x 78" for a full-sized bed) and one piece for the backrest (approximately 48" x 48").

Step 3: Build the Bed Platform Frame
Cut 2x4 lumber to create the frame for the bed platform. Assemble the frame using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws. Attach the plywood bed platform to the frame using 1-1/4" screws.
Step 4: Create the Backrest
Build a simple frame for the backrest using 2x4 lumber. Attach the plywood backrest to the frame using 1-1/4" screws. This will serve as the wall-mounted part of the bed.
Step 5: Install the Hardware
Attach the European-style hinge to the bottom of the bed platform and the top of the backrest. This hinge will allow the bed to fold up against the wall. Next, install the gas lift support on the inside of the bed platform. This will help lift the bed as you fold it up.

Step 6: Mount the Murphy Bed
Mark the studs in your wall using a stud finder. Attach the mounting hardware to the backrest, ensuring it aligns with the studs. Lift the Murphy bed into place and secure it to the wall using screws. Test the bed by folding it down and lifting it back up.
Step 7: Finish the Bed (Optional)
Paint or stain your Murphy bed to match your room's decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the bed.
Building a simple Murphy bed is a rewarding DIY project that can greatly improve the functionality of your space. With careful planning and precise measurements, you can create a bed that's both stylish and practical. Happy building!
