Mastering the Murphy Table Build: A Comprehensive Guide
The Murphy table, a versatile and space-saving piece of furniture, is a popular choice for small apartments and homes. Named after its inventor, William Lawrence Murphy, this innovative design allows a table to fold up against a wall, transforming from a dining table to a wall-mounted storage solution in seconds. Planning Your Murphy Table Build
Before you start, consider the dimensions of your space and your storage needs. A standard Murphy table is 72" long and 30" wide, but you can adjust these measurements to fit your space. Also, decide on the style and materials you want to use. Solid wood offers durability and a classic look, while plywood is more affordable and versatile.

Building the Table Top
The table top is the largest component of your Murphy table. For a solid wood top, use 1.5" thick boards. If you're using plywood, opt for 3/4" thick sheets. Cut your boards or sheets to the desired length and width, then sand and finish them as desired.
Constructing the Table Base
The table base consists of two long side panels, two shorter end panels, and four legs. Cut these pieces according to your table's dimensions. Assemble the base using wood glue and screws, ensuring the legs are square to the side and end panels.
Attaching the Pivot Hardware
The pivot hardware is what allows your table to fold up against the wall. Attach the pivot brackets to the inside of the table base, ensuring they're level and centered. Then, attach the pivot arms to the brackets. These arms will connect to the wall later on.
Installing the Gas Springs
Gas springs help counterbalance the weight of the table, making it easier to lift and lower. Attach the gas springs to the inside of the table base and the pivot arms. Ensure they're properly aligned and adjusted for the weight of your table top.
Mounting the Table to the Wall
With the help of another person, lift the table into position against the wall. Mark the location of the pivot arms on the wall, then install the wall brackets. Align the pivot arms with the wall brackets and secure them in place. Your Murphy table is now ready to use!
Optional: Adding Storage
To maximize your space, consider adding shelves or cabinets to the underside of your Murphy table. This can provide additional storage for books, dishes, or other items. Simply attach the shelves or cabinets to the table base before mounting it to the wall.
