Quiet a Noisy Air Conditioner
Older, 10 seer, single-speed equipment can be quite noisy in normal operation, especially the compressor fans, which can sound as loud as a small helicopter when operating normally. Newer, higher-efficiency air conditioners run much quieter. You will know when you hear noises you shouldn’t be hearing. A clicking or rattling sound is usually electrical, such as a relay or control.
Loose compressor motor mounts produce a rattle. Loud banging noises usually indicate a broken part, such as a crankshaft, piston or rod. A buzzing sound may be debris in the compressor unit being blown around by the fan, or a loose fan motor or blade.
Unclog the Condensate Drain Tube
Keeping track of the indoor components of your ac unit is just as important as the outside. Clear the drain. Your ac condensate drain fills with — you guessed it — condensation and water that your air conditioner releases. The plastic tube can be heaven for mold, which could clog your system and back everything up. Use special ac pan pills to keep your condensate drain from clogging, or use a shop vac to remove a clog if it’s already formed. Check your filter. A quality filter is essential for keeping dirt and grime out of your blower. Typically, we recommend that every homeowner change their filter every three months or so.

Consulting professional technicians to evaluate the right size of your ac comes in handy because they understand the factors that will help you choose the best model. For instance, a bigger size is not always the best option. If you equip a small space with a large-sized ac that offers plenty of cooling, it could cycle on and off too quickly without efficiently removing humidity from the air. As a result, you will not feel cold but rather damp.
Replacing old and dirty filters is one thing you can do regularly to keep your ac unit running more efficiently. Filters that are clogged with dirt and dust forces your ac and blower to work much harder, which means higher electric bills. If you can locate your filter, simply remove and discard. If you’re not sure what size, check the size on the old filter; the dimensions will be printed on the cardboard frame. Replace the filter at least twice a year, more often if you live in an area that’s especially dusty, windy or prone to heavy pollen.
