Planning Your Additional Sink Location

The success of adding another sink starts with careful placement. In a kitchen, common choices include the area beside the main prep zone or near a cooking station, while in a bathroom, options often involve extending into a powder room or en suite setup. Before finalizing the location, verify there is enough clearance for comfortable use, adequate lighting, and reliable access to existing water supply lines and drainage.

Essential Tools and Materials

Preparing the Space and Shutting Off Utilities

Close the relevant shutoff valves for hot and cold water, then open the faucet to drain residual pressure from the lines. Place a bucket under the area to catch any drips, and use your tools to disconnect existing supply lines only after you are certain the water is fully off. For new sink installations that require cutting into the countertop or wall, measure carefully, mark with tape, and use the appropriate cutting tools to maintain clean, precise edges.

Connecting Water Supply Lines

Attach flexible supply lines to the new fixture, ensuring the connections are tight and leak-free. Use a basin wrench for under-sink areas where space is limited, and double-check that hot and cold lines are aligned correctly with the corresponding valve feeds. Once connected, slowly open the shutoff valves and inspect for any signs of dripping or seepage before proceeding.

Installing the Drain System

Proper drainage is essential to prevent backups and standing water. Assemble the P-trap and tailpiece according to manufacturer instructions, and secure all joints firmly. It is normal for the setup to feel stable yet not completely rigid, as slight adjustments are often required to align with the existing drainpipe. Test the system by running water and checking underneath for any unexpected movement or leaks.

Testing and Final Adjustments

After all connections are made, turn the water supply back on and let the sink run for several minutes. Look for leaks at the supply valves, under the sink, and around the drain. Check that the basin drains completely and that the flow direction does not interfere with the adjacent sink or appliance. Make any needed tweaks, such as tightening connections or repositioning the mounting hardware, before finishing the installation with caulk and seam sealer.

2 - Concrete basins - well, the stains from water alone says it all… I would have expected much better water resistance given they are basins and I don’t feel I should have to wipe my basin down any time it gets wet - that’s a little too high maintenance for my liking. We’ve fixed these by sanding and re sealing and now we have a wax to use to protect them which we were never given from our supplier at the time… so I’ll keep you all posted on how they go now that we’ve repaired them.

With the plumbing and alignment confirmed, complete the visual finish by wiping down surfaces, reinstalling any trim or accessories, and sealing edges with fresh caulk. Going forward, schedule a quick monthly check under the sink to catch slow drips early and keep the added sink in reliable working order.
